What inspired you to start Made in Brazil?
I created it with Liquified to launch the Brazilian talents in L.A. because people don’t know them here. This new generation is into the new talent, not just samba and carnival. [Ed. note. Rosario works for Liquified, which promotes at Avalon every Saturday.]
You're from Brazil, right?
Yes. I used to work for Spin Club, an entertainment company in Brazil. We used to throw parties for 800 to 10,000 people. We even threw parties at Warung, which is known as the third best club in the world. It’s a club on the beach.
How is the Brazilian scene different from the other dance scenes?
It’s this energy that I can’t explain to you. Brazilian people have a lot of energy. We party from our heart.
The first two installments of Made in Brazil attracted more than 2,000 people. How did everyone find out about it?
The Brazilian community is so strong and they’re really proud of this party. People even want to help me promote and pass out fliers, even though they are not paid.
Is everyone at Made in Brazil actually from Brazil?
At least half.
How can you tell?
I can feel the vibe.
What differentiates Mary Zander and Leozinho from other electronic DJs?
They play for the crowd; they don’t play for themselves. Mary Zander is the biggest female DJ in Brazil. She plays sexy house music and is really feminine. She’s also a model and represents the beauty of the Brazilian woman. And Leo, who is part of the collective Life as a Loop, which has two DJs and a live percussionist, plays progressive house. And there’s Alex G. too. He’s a Brazilian who lives in L.A. He’s the warm-up DJ.
What can we expect from the third installment on August 25?
Basically we want a really summery night with really good house music for a Brazilian crowd. It’ll be the perfect place to come party after a day at the beach.
Made in Brazil: Summer Session goes down at The Avalon on August 25 from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. Alex G. spins from 10 p.m. to midnight. Mary Zander takes over the decks until 2 a.m. and Leozinho will finish the night with a three-hour set.
