Loyola Marymount University is not only near LAX, it’s also near the beach, giving its nearby bars a relaxed SoCal vibe. Loads of LMU kids head to Hermosa to get their nights started, but there are a few newer bars nearby getting the kids amped up.
Tompkins Square Bar and Grill
This upscale bar offers 20 beers on tap—plenty for the male species to feed on. Located next to a KFC/Taco Bell, Tompkins is a surprising alternative to the neighborhood strip mall, thanks to its gourmet burgers and highbrow brews. Low-key LMU folks take over the solid walnut bar nearly every night, along with softball teams and thirsty locals.
Hopscotch Lounge
Tucked inside the chic Custom Hotel, Tuesdays and Thursdays (and their drink specials) are dedicated to those upscale LMU folk. Students come back to the sexy poolside lounge for the easy-on-the-eyes crowd and the high probability for the evening getting “intimate” in the candlelit nooks. The bar is outdoors, but it has a plethora of heat lamps to keep folks warm, even during winter semester.
Baja Sharkeez in Manhattan
Thursdays at Sharkeez brim with a stumbly crowd of LMU beach bodies who slurp down margaritas and beer—sometimes at the same time—and bust a move on the tiny dance floor, putting those, um, chemistry courses to use.
