Just opened: The Griffin

Atwater's newest watering hole is quite possibly the coziest bar in town

Atwater Village isn’t exactly known for its bar scene outside of the Bigfoot Lodge and The Roost, both kitschy watering holes that have attracted the likes of Morrissey (the former) and Karen O (the latter). But that might change with The Griffin, a new bar that’s big enough to fit the entire neighborhood.

From the dudes behind Eagle Rock's Swiss-inspired spot The Chalet and
screenwriter and director Jonathan Hensleigh, this latest venture is just as warm and romantic. On a recent summer night (during the heat wave), I felt like I’d walked into an après-ski lodge and instantly craved hot cocoa. Red leather couches circle around two modular fireplaces; low-lit lanterns hang from high, domed brick ceilings; and vintage landscapes adorn the walls, inspiring a spark of nostalgia for my philosophy class about Henry David Thoreau. Add a little indie rock, care of an awesome jukebox, and you’re all set.

Along the perimeter of the bar are closet-sized rooms with semi-private booths. (For ultimate intimacy, close the red curtains and voila: a whole room to yourself. Wink, wink.) Outside, there’s an even cozier smoking patio with brown leather seats spacious enough to kick up your feet.

But The Griffin’s not all about mood. For every couple cuddling by the fireplace, there’s a group of friends clinking beers and sipping whiskey. The night I visited, some were low-key, others more rowdy—hey, when you can get a vodka soda and Guinness for $13, it’s hard not to get a little loose.

Stay tuned: The Griffin will start serving food at the end of the month.
