IF you voted Obama in, this is NOT a business in America one should patronize, no matter how slick the look...Swanky on the inside, RACIST on the outside! Read on....
At around 11pm-ish 7/2, myself and another friend, walked over to enter Bar Chloe in Santa Monica. I'd been there before, and met with one of their bartenders on May 28th, another Thursday night ironically. The bartender I'd met, with another friend that previous night in May, was Blake. We exchanged business cards, and because it was getting late, we were on our way, VERY amicably. But July 2nd, upon trying to enter Chloe, it was the TOTAL opposite because for some "racist" reason - we weren't even allowed in under the pretense that it was a "private party" - which turned out to be a big fat lie since we stuck around witnessing people who didn't even know the name of the bar, inquiring innocently and even blatantly asking if there was a cover, to get in without a problem. ALL of these patrons were WHITE. We weren't allowed under the pretense that there was a private party. To make matters worse, two folks we had met randomly on the corner in front of Hotel Carmel, who were tourists and asked us what's a good night spot around here, after we pointed to Bar Chloe, and eventually after a while, these two people showed up to the door, minutes after we got rejected, and they were let in, looking at us bizarrely like why weren't we coming in.
We WERE embarrassed and felt below human, and like boys. I'm married for two years - my friend has kids - we felt humuliated.
The tone of the stupid bouncer - racist to say the least - was rude. 20 white people got in while we stood up waitin - yes I counted and unfortunately when you experience stuff like this, something few whites would endure, you stoop to desperate measures to make sure your heart isn't hurt or scarred for nothing :(
We - my friend and I - are on a campaign to get our voices heard, because I'm sure there were many before us victimized and many will follow if we don't STAND UP and broadcast this practice.
It is Santa Monica, the place we revere, wehere my friend actually lived for 5 years, now we have a black president - and these backward practices still exists in one of the most forward, liberal, progressive cities in the United States?????
Terrible feeling.
Report This ReviewThis is a chic but simple beautiful bar. Have been several times, always a good looking crowd and not the typical yahoos of Santa Monica. The bartender Blake is fantastic and gave us the complete rundown on the cocktails and menu on our first visit. Love everything about it. Cozy sofas, great music. Great vibe. Definitely recommend trying the specialty cocktails, they are delicious.
Report This ReviewI've been to Chloe twice and wouldn't recommend it. This bar trys to be more hollywood than it actually is. This is the only place in Santa Monica that I've ever had issues with the door man in my ten years of living here. Go somewhere else with less hassle.
Report This ReviewGreat potential as the space is really well designed.. but, sadly the place has a bad door policy and the staff are way too cool for their own good. Hopefully they will see the errors of their ways before it's too late and the word spreads.
Report This ReviewChloe is a great little lounge, with a cool variety of music, specialty drinks, and good food. The service we experienced was impeccable -- and very nice-looking...
