Tom Whitman's Smack Thursdays @ O Bar
The deal: Why on earth would bar owners, who make the majority of their money from alcohol sales, not charge for booze? The concept behind hosting an open bar is to coax people to a venue before the socially acceptable time of 11:30 p.m., so that when the fashionably late and uber-cool people arrive, they don’t walk into an empty bar. To that end, the dudes at LAX put a free keg on the dance floor every Sunday at 10 p.m. for Banana Split Sundaes; Element hosts an open bar every Saturday from 10 p.m. to 11 p.m., as does Temporary Spaces. But our vote for best open bar goes to O Bar’s Smack Thursdays, when promoter Tom Whitman pours free shots for everyone during five-minute intervals at 9:15 p.m., 11:15 p.m. and 12:15 a.m. There’s a countdown too, so you know exactly when to head to the bar.
When: Thursdays; 9:15 p.m., 11:15 p.m. and 12:15 a.m.
Bottom line: Knock yourself out by taking free shots.
