Sidecar
The Sidecar is restrained and classy. It’s reflective of the quieter, less flashy side of the ’70s, the contingent that enjoyed being groovy—up to a point, within moderation—and drove the family station wagon. If the “Three's Company” kids (and Mr. Roper) drank Pink Squirrels and Salty Dogs, then Mike Brady drank Sidecars. Even its name states that it need not be the center of attention, but rather the accomplice to a contented, semi-sophisticated lifestyle.
The taste
“Adult” tasting; considered a sipping drink. Resembles a daiquiri: subtly sweet and sour in just the right combo and served in a sugar-rimmed glass.
The recipe
1 1/2 ounces brandy or cognac
1/2 ounce triple sec or Cointreau
1/2 ounce lemon or lime luice
Combine ingredients in a shaker with ice and shake briskly. Strain into cocktail glass.
