Singapore Sling
This beverage was invented sometime between 1910 and 1915 by legendary bartender Ngiam Tong Boon at the Raffles Hotel in Singapore, but the Sling didn’t really swing until the ’70s. You could probably vomit from this drink’s romanticized pseudo-Polynesian kitsch factor alone—without actually even tasting the thing. But then you'd be missing out on one of the most elaborate, florid and crimson-colored cocktails on Earth.
The taste
Syrupy sweet tonic water offset by a slightly sour/bitter twist.
The recipe
1 1/2 ounces gin
1/2 ounce Cherry Heering brandy
1/4 ounce Cointreau
1/4 ounce Benedictine
4 ounces pineapple juice
1/2 ounce lime juice
1/3 ounce grenadine
Dash of bitters
Combine ingredients in a shaker with ice and shake vigorously. Strain into a Collins glass filled with ice. Garnish with a slice of pineapple and a cherry.
