Spotlight on: A Club Called Rhonda

If you’ve never been to Guatelinda, brace yourself. The club—complete with mirrored walls, Greek-style statues of naked ladies, neon lights and chandeliers—is a total trip. Stepping into this East Hollywood nightclub is like being transported to a sketchy Miami discothèque circa 1975. There's even a black-and-white checkered dance floor, which gives it a nice mafioso touch.

But don't expect to see polyester pants here, at least not every other Thursday during A Club Called Rhonda, the venue's "polysexual dance party." Put on by promoters Aaron Castle and Goddollars (Gregori Nunez, Loren Granic and Kimi), as well as resident DJ Maxwell Smart, Rhonda is so fashionable that even designer Jeremy Scott has been by to spin.

In fact, the crowd at Rhonda is like a living runway show. Sequined mini-dresses and metallic leggings glimmer under a giant disco ball as partygoers move to nonstop beats from Derrick May, Salsoul Orchestra, Carl Craig and Bizarre Inc.

At any other venue Rhonda might be your standard disco-house party, but at Guatelinda things can get a little risqué. Clubbers are encouraged to “shed clothes and inhibitions," Nunez says, and to "make out with the nearest person, no matter their gender.” We’re sure the free shots served by Jell-O shot girl Foust and the $2 drink specials help loosen up the crowd.

Now if only the bartenders would speed it up behind the bar—or teach that one busty barkeep what goes in a vodka tonic.
