The time is now for those who produce design-based work. With dollars to be earned in the easy transference of art to more mobile media like tennis shoes and snowboards, it makes sense that artists would take up a more financially productive line of work—as opposed to, say, frittering away at moldy canvases and eventually cutting off an ear.

Design firm National Forest proves there’s still plenty of room to move within the boundaries of art for art’s sake. “Somehow, We All Seem Connected,” the new exhibition at Shepard Fairey's Subliminal Projects gallery, showcases the giddy imaginings of co-founders Justin Krietemeyer and Steven Harrington. Krietemeyer’s collage work presents black-and-white photos of gatherings of long-haired freaky people, all juxtaposed against shapes of bright colors. Indeed, the whole process seems primed for the back of a long-sleeved Quiksilver T-shirt. Steven Harrington’s day-glo tepees and landscapes recall the intricate notebook tableaux of a teenager obsessed with British prog-rock and the poster art of Alton Kelley.
