What: Portland-based painter Lesley Reppeteaux won our hearts as soon as we saw her art nouveau-inspired color palette and whimsically cartoonish creatures frolicking in fanciful nature settings. With Tumbling, her solo show opening at Thinkspace Gallery, the self-confessed bookworm explores the Greek myth of Hades and Persephone. (Remember your freshman classics class?) Get lost in narrative paintings starring a lanky, hypersexual demigoddess trapped in wild, surreal settings…sometimes with a buffalo.
Why: If our classics curriculum had involved Reppeteaux's sexy scenery, we wouldn't have had to Google "Persephone" just now to jog our memory.
Harvest and do handstands for it: Thinkspace Gallery, 4210 Santa Monica Blvd., Silverlake; 7 p.m.; free
