Breaking into the film industry is, like, hard. But thanks to the bleeding–heart generosity of events like Hollyshorts Film Festival, up–and–coming talents have an opportunity to be the next Speilberg or Tarantino ... or at least maybe direct some of those Hallmark movies on Lifetime. Hey, they pay the bills, smartass.

The festival, in its third year, screens only bite-sized films (no more than 30 minutes) in various Hollywood venues over the course of a weekend. It's a press bonanza, with red carpets, raw talent, and laminated badges to be worn on lanyards.

And while this is a chance to help newbies wedge their ambitious feet in the door, it wouldn’t be Hollywood without any competition, right? This year’s judges include actor Joey Naber, who just happened to be in last year’s short film Oscar winner “West Bank Story."  And while Mr. Adrian Grenier (a.ka. my future husband) is not exactly an up–and–comer, he'll debut his own short-length baby “Euthanasia” for the festival’s kick-off.

The festival will also feature panels that focus on the ins and outs of the industry. And just to up the star factor a notch, well, half a notch, Biz Markie is dee-jaying the closing reception. (Remember that song “Just a Friend” from the ‘80s? Yeah.)

Where: Nacional and Cinespace. Click here for specific movie times and locations.

When: August 10-12, 2007

Why: Did we mention that Adrian Grenier will be there? Oh, and there are some good films screening or whatever.
