I don't care if I have to walk to Maine or scale a burning pile of metal in the Arctic Circle—if there is a lobster festival, I want to be there. In this case, driving 20 minutes to get my keester to San Pedro is kind of no big deal.
Picture 13 tons of lobster flown in from the Atlantic, people shamelessly dressed as pirates, really effing good music and dogs wearing lobster hats. Add a mohawked DJ from Indie 103 introducing bands with lobster claws on his hands, cauldrons of "real buttery topping" and a few cold brews in the sea breeze, and you've got quite a mish-mash of The Awesome.
There are a few lobster festivals in Southern California, but this weekend's Lobster Festival at the Port of Los Angeles is...(wait for it) the largest in the world. Take that Maine! Bigger than your lobsterfests! Snap.
In addition to presenting enough lobster to make grown men giddy, the fest is also down with the hip. Don't expect a day milling around dodging families and trying to ignore tinny honkytonk on crappy PA's. Indie 103 co-curated the entertainment, and some of the best Eastside music darlings are making the trek to pepper the bill. We're super-stoked for Oliver Future, the Henry Clay People and the Monlators, and we have a feeling that if you're a regular at the Echo or Silverlake Lounge, you'll be bumping into your skinny-jeaned comrades over coleslaw and claw-crackers or running into your neighbor while peeping the LobsterDog Pet Parade. Yes, it is as ridiculous as it sounds.
The Lobster Festival runs Friday Sept. 19 through Sunday Sept. 21 at the Port of Los Angeles. Admission is $8 for adults and includes all live entertainment, but prepare to shell out about $18 for a 1.5 lb lobster meal. We've done some price comparisons and, as lobster whores, know that's a really good deal. Plus, check the Lobster Festival site for a $2-off admission coupon, or get the first class weekend pass, which includes admission all three days, a free beverage and lobster meal all for $39. Oh, and a necklace, which we predict will be the accessory for fall, at least in our office.
