Jophen Stein's waffle-infused "American Logic"
Monday, Jan. 7
—Mondays are typically a snoozy day, but there's plenty of reason to be jazzed about the start of the Parson Red Heads' free Monday-night residency at Spaceland. Trust us.
Tuesday, Jan. 8
—Even if Zooey Deschanel were performing behind a dumpster in Wichita, I'd still go. Luckily, she'll be at Disney Hall with Inara George and folks from both TV on the Radio and Belle and Sebastian for the L.A. Phil's "Songs of the City." I'm sold.
—No, he's not Sting, but Police guitarist Andy Summers will be in the flesh at Amoeba signing a new book of photographs, which have nothing to do with tantra.
Wednesday, Jan. 9
—We're of the opinion that there's a shortage of both political outrage and tight pants these days, so we urge you to get inspired by watching Jean-Luc Godard's "Sympathy for the Devil," free at the Hammer. Yes, people once made art flicks about politics, and yes, Mick Jagger used to look hot.
—As long as we're in movie mode, how about a screening of "Eastern Promises" at the new ArcLight in Sherman Oaks, with a Q&A with Mr. David Cronenberg?
Thursday, Jan. 10
—So you want a pet, but you're allergic to cats. Lame. Have you considered several million bacteria chillin' in a terrarium? At Machine Project, Denise King shows you how to grow colorful colonies that are both totally gross and very pretty.
Friday, Jan. 11
—If you don't already have a tortured infatuation with Chet Baker, hit the Nuart for "Let's Get Lost." I don't care if the man had played the kazoo and smoked crack—he was still a fox.
—The World of Wonder Gallery in Hollywood thinks you should check out some work by/about/inspired by Andy Warhol. So persuasive are they that they're encouraging you to wear a "silver fright wig provided by the gallery." Did we mention there's also an open vodka bar? Yeah, see you there.
Saturday, Jan. 12
—Being that the L.A. art scene is saturated with the influence of Takashi Murakami, it only makes sense that you attend MOCA's panel discussion headed by Giant Robot's Eric Nakamura.
—If Japan's Superflat art movement isn't your thing, pop into Jophen Stein's solo show at Project in Culver City, where you can discover for yourself how waffles and Napoleon are cosmically intertwined.
Sunday, Jan. 13
—We never said we weren't nerds. And just to prove it, we're going to a lecture about bugs at the Natural History Museum, then hitting a comic book convention at the Shrine in hopes that Claire Forlani notices us. Consider our nerd flag proudly waved.
Enjoy the week, my comrades. I'll see you out there—look for the chick staring at bugs and wearing a silver fright wig.
