Move over Aoki. Samantha Ron-who? We know there's an inner badass in all of us, ready to hold headphones in the crook of a shoulder and look down on the masses at Guy’s or Avalon like a demi-god. But we're losers, and don't know the difference between mixing it up on the ones versus the twos. Is there a difference? We decided to scratch and learn.

Hidden between a Smart and Final and Lucky’s Dog Grooming is R.E.H.A.B. Record Store , home to Scratch Academy. The secret password? Your DJ alias (try adding Funkmaster). The place is an underground haven for urban hipsters, laden with crisp vinyls and "phat" beats. A passion for music is encouraged for lessons, and basic rhythm is a plus (tone deafs, spare us). All other techniques can be learned in the 101 course, including the essentials—mixing, blending, and scratching.

A portrait of Jam Master Jay looks down on the newbies, each lined up in front of their turntable thrones. They learn everything from dropping the needle to the difference between disc-jockey Ryan Seacrest and DJ Grandmaster Flash (and it's not just the frosted hair). Hand to record, bringing it back to nine-o-clock—the DJ demeanor is a serious one. The instructors know their ish, and overall, vibe was like being at a party while learning how to be the life of the party. Good times.

Even if you don’t plan on being L.A.’s next big thang, a session makes you capable at the very least of mixing up a dance party for you and Mr. Whiskers in your apartment. But beware: after a lesson at Scratch Academy, you may develop an insatiable habit of leafing through stacks of used vinyl. It may be worth it though—everybody loves a DJ (especially in this town).
