Better thyself: walking the walk

For the love of green, you can exist (gasp!) carless in L.A.

Better thyself: walking the walk
So you want to reduce your carbon footprint but don’t want to shell out the green to buy yourself a Prius—what’s a treehugger to do? Simple: Start pounding the pavement with those two clodhoppers usually reserved for displaying your fav kicks and break out five clams for an MTA day pass.

That’s right folks, you can walk in L.A. Here are three easy tips to help those virginal souls who have never walked and taken mass transit in L.A.

1. Plan Your Day
Visit www.MTA.net, which will soon become your best friend. You can plan a route from Lakewood to North Hollywood if you so desire and it will not only advise you on which side of the street to wait for the buses, times to catch, and your ETA, but also how much the trip would've cost if you'd driven a car. Aren’t you glad you live in the future?

2. Bring Amusement
iPods: the proverbial stone that kills two birds. You will be able to relax with your choice tunes and tune out the rest of the crazies on the bus. And believe you me, the bus has those in spades. If you want to go low-tech, bring a book, Mr. Smarty Pants.

3. Document Life
This could be as simple as bringing a pad of paper or even your camera phone, but you seriously need to capture some of the shenanigans that occur on the bus. Where else in L.A. can you see a guy hold a complete conversation with a parrot, or a man who thinks he’s a spider? Yes, I’ve witnessed both. So strap on your trusty messenger bag, brave those vicious sidewalks and say au revoir to parking meters, road rage and bad drivers. And while you’re spending time waiting for the bus to arrive, just remind yourself that you’re saving the environment, one step at a time.

Practice your new earthy ways and hop on a bus to Santa Monica for Renee Loux's signing of the book "Easy Green Living" at Exhale Spa. Ahhh, you feel better already, don't you?
