‘Love love’; 11 by 14 inches; colored pencil, pastel, acrylic and guache on paper
Trolling the vast universe of the blogosphere, we recently found ourselves struck by Daniel Lim’s new body of work, aptly titled “1000 Drawings.” After graduating with a BA and an MFA in illustration, the Monterey Park artist found himself run aground, deep in credit card debt and turning to video games for solace.
Broke and uninspired by freelance illustration, Lim (who also goes by "Fawn Fruits") was hit with an epiphany and decided to lock himself in his studio to create 1000 pieces for sale at $100 each, allowing him to effectively draw for a living. The result is a bogglingly prolific amount of gorgeous, ethereal, bug-eyed doll-faces—as well as a book deal, a T-shirt line and a raised profile. He’ll be showing a few of the 1000 drawings, plus some larger works on panel, at the Grind Gallery’s group show "Under the Radar" in Mar Vista on Friday, May 23. We suspect that all that drawing gives him hand cramps, but we bet he doesn’t mind.
See “Under the Radar” at the Grind Gallery, Mar Vista, 310-397-2244. The free opening reception is Fri., May 23, from 7 p.m.-11 p.m and the show runs through June 13.
