'Skunk,' styrofoam, plexiglass, spray paint, and covers from books
What better day than Earth Day to check out a tribute to the hardy scavenger animals that will clamber over our remains after we destroy things? With his “Animals of the Future” series, Chicago-born, L.A.-based artist Treiops Treyfid (not his given name) poses the question “Who are the critters that will survive?” then answers it with a collection of new work that's got the spirit of nature-lovin' Bob Ross but the stark graphic sensibility of Banksy-esque stencil artists.
Using recycled and found materials, Treyfid overruns the M.J. Higgins Gallery with homages to the robust raccoon, the indestructible city pigeon, rats, squirrels and skunks. The earthy opening—involving DJ sets laced with the animals' sampled sounds and some “recycled hors d’oeuvres”—will celebrate both the artist and the roaches, but the latter will not be invited to the festivities. We hope.
