Free wine, anyone?

We like art, but we love free wine. Actually we love art after some free wine.

If you're in the mood for a gathering, a glass of merlot in a plastic cup, some quality artwork and the chance to chat up the hottie staring pensively at a wall, take notes on this weekend's art happenings:

Zoso - No Rest for the Weary

Mercedes Helnwein - Whistling Past The Graveyard

323-933-4408

Aug. 30 - Sept. 20: Meticulously excecuted, large-scale drawings from Angeleno artist (and writer) Mercedes Helnwein. Concentrating on "uncompleted" scenes, Helwein's work employs both black and colored pencils to render Raymond Carver-like situations that teeter on the edge of the unexpected. The opening reception, hosted by Jason Lee (yes, that Jason Lee), is Aug. 30, 8 - 11 p.m.

Dog and Pony show - benefit

Dog and Pony show - benefit

Aug. 30 - Sept. 1: This whirlwind benefit for musicians without healthcare, inspired by the untimely passing of roots musician Chris Gaffney to liver cancer, presents an impressive amount of art and collectibles for sale. With works donated from La Luz De Jesus Gallery and Copro Nason, artists include Edward Colver, Bad Otis Link, Scott Angle, Beat Eye Media, Joe Wood, and John Cormack. Chew on some BBQ and check out musical offerings from Blasters, Tex and the Horseheads, Dave Alvin and the Guilty Men, Hacienda Brothers and Big Sandy and his Fly-Rite Boys.

Cannibal Flower - group art show
