Align your chakras and your budget for the New Year
By Alie Ward, Metromix
January 1, 2008The solution? Cheap yoga. We hereby present the most poverty-friendly places to pose like a warrior, lay like a corpse, and get your Zen on in L.A. this new year:
Guerilla Yoga
- The Hollywood Dance Center - 817 Highland Ave. - Hollywood
Yoga classes and workshops with Marc Holzman can be yours for a "suggested donation" of 10 smackers. His classes are delightfully no-fuss: Arrive, plop down, and "open to grace," as he says. Kick down what cash you can, but don't expect to mooch a mat—you are going to have to rustle one of those up beforehand, champ.
Yogi Dana's donation yoga
- Studio A Dance - 2306 Hyperion Ave. - Silver Lake
Some of Silverlake's Studio A Dance yoga classes feature a pay-whatcha-can sliding scale, which totally works for us. Hit Yogi Dana's Tuesday, Thursday or Sunday classes for some seriously affordable chakra alignment.
Donation yoga with Jillian Szafranski
- Studio A Dance - 2306 Hyperion Ave. - Silver Lake
Get your weekend started by bending into various contortions at Jillian Szafranski's donation yoga class, also at Studio A. She's suggesting $10 to cover the rental of the space, and electricity and... heat. So cash in the loose change in your car's ashtray, or just promise to pay more the next time. Saturdays, 11 a.m.
Lululemon Athletica
334 Beverly Dr. - Beverly HillsThis Beverly Hills Yoga center helps you feel connected to the rest of the world by boasting locations in Japan, British Columbia and other relatively exotic locales. You can ponder that while you're crouched in downward dog. Every Sunday, Lululemon hosts a free session of yoga, which is pretty rare for ritzy ol' Beverly Hills. Check their website or give them a call for details, and prepare to sweat out all that spiked cider you've been guzzling.
Power Yoga
1410 2nd St. - Santa MonicaThis iconic Westside yoga studio is run under the stewardship of Bryan Kest. Sign up for a free introductory class or pop into a session for the suggested $12 donation—which is actually less than a drink at Cinespace. And probably a little better for you.
Yoga Circle
400 South Main St. - Los AngelesFor those of you who work downtown, we suggest a prowl through the Yoga Circle. They’ve got a pretty interesting rule about payments: There’s a suggested $16 contribution, but if you can’t scrounge that up, just pay what you can and drop more in the box later. Also, they “warmly accept donations other than the monetary sort: Time, energy, services, etc." Cash is king, but at least you can exchange some juggling lessons or tax advice for a workout. Hey, that master's degree might be good for something after all!
Runyon Canyon Yoga
- Runyon Canyon Park - 2000 Fuller Dr. - Los Angeles
Free? We're not kidding. They're giving away yoga lessons in Runyon Canyon Park! But since this is a free class, just remember that sometimes you get what you pay for. The instructors are subject to change, and don't expect your fellow yoga practitioners to always adhere to the rules. Regardless, we're hearing good things about these sessions. Located near the Fuller entrance, classes start at 10:30 a.m. daily and 4:30 p.m. in the evenings on Tuesday and Thursday.
