Hermosa Beach is sort of the middle child of the beach cities. Set between Manhattan’s polished slickness and Redondo’s salty unpretentiousness, it combines elements of both to make for a diverse experience. The pier area, only one part of downtown Hermosa, tends to cater to the rowdy, beachkegger crowd; but don’t let that scare you off. There’s plenty more to see, and who knows—you might actually enjoy guzzling a pitcher of Sierra Nevada, sporting flip-flops and singing along to a Dave Matthews cover band.

A guide to food, antiques and surf boards in this beachside spot

Hermosa General Store
1248 Hermosa Ave. - Hermosa BeachThe HGS, going strong since 1971, is a tropical-themed cornucopia of mens and womens beach clothing, jewelry, silly decorative lamps, towels, paintings, souvenir mugs, miniature African sculptures, hot sauces, and tiki accessories. You could spend hours browsing the tons of colorful curios jammed in and popping out at you in every direction. Unfortunately, the bamboo mini-waterfalls on display arent for sale.
Los Muchachos Mexican Restaurant
118 Pier Ave. - Hermosa BeachThis Mexican food joint is co-owned by a couple of local Hermosa semi-celebrities: Fletcher Dragge, guitarist for punk band Pennywise, and Eric Fonoimoana, an Olympic gold medalist in volleyball. The narrow, rectangular room feels like an ancient diner spot, but it’s shaken up by scads of punk rock stickers, giant mirrors, framed volleyball jerseys and local maps adorning the walls. And as cool as the owners and decor are, it’s the burritos, tacos and enchiladas that keep people coming back.
Becker Surf and Sport
301 Pier Ave. - Hermosa BeachOpened in 1980 by Phil Becker, this shop is known around town for building high-quality custom surfboards and selling stylish beach gear for men, women and children. There are five other locations along the coast, but this outpost remains the most popular. Fun fact: The store has constructed over 100,000 surfboards, more than anyone else in the world!
Creme de la Crepe
424 Pier Ave. - Hermosa BeachPerhaps our new president-elect will help bridge the cultural divide between two great nations: the USA and France. (Anyone remember “freedom fries”?) Until then, the French-run Creme De La Crepe is here to remind us we’re not so different. After all, what is a crepe but a fancy pancake with some tasty fillings? Stop by to sample the Parisian-style decor and the très délicieux menu of savory and sweet crepes.
Planet Earth Eco Cafe
509 Pier Ave. - Hermosa BeachThe name should clue you in that you wont find processed, factory-made food or sugar-loaded soft drinks on the menu. You will find books for borrowing, placid nature photography on the walls, organic coffee drinks, vegan red-velvet cupcakes, soups, shakes and occasional live music acts. Viva planet Earth!
Stars Antique Market
526 Pier Ave. - Hermosa BeachIf you dont need, dont like or dont understand oddball knickknacks and kitschy Americana collectibles, this emporium might confound and confuse you. But if youre into old war medals, decorative lighters, costume jewelry, baseball cards or porcelain tchotchkes, youll be in garage sale heaven. Perhaps in 100 years itll be packed with faded iPods, TiVos and Sarah Palin buttons.
