Local Positioning: Los Feliz (for the rest of us)

Los Feliz has long been at the forefront of the gentrification sweeping the Eastside. Some of us like to see ourselves as bystanders in this process rather than active participants: We're the ones you always hear grumbling about how we can't afford our own neighborhood anymore. So we've decided to do something about it. Let's take a stroll down Hillhurst Avenue-with an eye toward our wallets.

Cheech’s Pizza

We wouldn't call the pizza at Cheech's great—this probably isn't the best place to take grumbling visitors from the East Coast—but it is cheap. Some in the neighborhood have been living off the stuff for years. Non-carnivores, fear not: The vegetarian meatball sub is amazing.

Yuca's

Yuca's

2056 Hillhurst Ave., Los Angeles
323-662-1214

There are probably more articles written about which taco stand is the best than there are actual taco stands in L.A. We'll not bore you with another. Suffice it to say, Yuca's makes awesome tacos.

Ye Rustic Inn

Ye Rustic Inn

1831 Hillhurst Ave., Los Angeles
323-662-5757

Cheap beer and Buffalo wings, in case vegan grub won't cut the mustard. Ye Rustic is an institution, and if you're lucky you might glimpse that weird dude who's always walking around with a bird on his shoulder.

Green Leaves Vegan

Green Leaves Vegan

1769 Hillhurst Ave., Los Angeles
323-664-2345

The $6 "chicken" and pancakes at this funny little vegan diner is a top contender for the best cheap meal in L.A. It's a take on a classic down-home dish, but totally flesh free. Plus, they've got Guitar Hero set up by the front door, so you can enjoy a little free entertainment while you visit.

Cap'n Cork Liquor

Cap'n Cork Liquor

1674 Hillhurst Ave., Los Angeles
323-665-1260

The Cap'n is certainly not the cheapest liquor store in town, probably not even the cheapest one on the block, but they've got a secret inside for romantic types on a budget.  The upended wine barrels at the end of each aisle are piled high with bottles of half-off wine.
