PICK OF THE WEEK: 1408

A slew of older horror films hit stores this week in hi-def or special edition re-issues, but the newest genre title is "1408." Adapted from a Stephen King short story, the tale of a writer (John Cusack) who spends a night in an allegedly haunted hotel doesn't rank among the best King adaptations, but it has a few good scares and was a surprise modest hit at the summer box office.

In addition to the standard movie-only DVD release, there's a two-disc special edition available which contains the original theatrical cut and a slightly longer unrated version. Bonus features include director/screenwriter commentary, deleted scenes, a behind-the-scenes featurette and two webisodes.
