Every few years a movie comes along that gets people talking about the resurgence of the Western. Even though the classic Hollywood genre still holds widespread appeal it's perpetually confined to underdog status at the box office, which makes each success a surprise.
"3:10 to Yuma" wasn't a blockbuster but it did well enough for Hollywood to take notice--the minimal drop-offs in its weekly box office were especially impressive. And its ensemble cast even picked up an unexpected nomination from the Screen Actors Guild for best ensemble of 2007.
The movie is actually a remake of a respected 1957 tale about an upstanding rancher and family man (Bale) who escorts a career criminal (Crowe) to a train that will ship the bad guy to his judgment day. But he won't go easily and there are plenty of gunfights, reversals and dead bodies along the way.
DVD bonus features include the standard making-ofs, deleted scenes and a director's commentary from James Mangold ("Walk the Line").
