Unquestionably the most successful movie to hit DVD this week is "Wild Hogs," the comedy that proved John Travolta, Martin Lawrence, Tim Allen and William H. Macy always were a crowd-pleasing comic quartet just waiting to happen. So, you could rent that. Or, if you're interested in experimental film, you'll want to pick up "David Lynch's Inland Empire" (and possibly the "Aqua Teen Hunger Force" movie too).
But, if you're just looking for a great rental or a fine addition to a DVD collection, head straight for "The Lookout." Released in the spring with a low-key marketing campaign that led to disappointingly miniscule box office, the impressive directorial debut of screenwriter Scott Frank ("Out of Sight") is a smart, engrossing, character-driven thriller with excellent performances from Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Jeff Daniels, Matthew Goode and Isla Fisher. Serving as both the writer and director, Frank builds the tension in this small town contemporary film noir slowly, but effectively.
The special features on the DVD release are fairly standard: an audio commentary with Frank and the cinematographer, a making-of featurette and a second featurette on memory loss, an important element of the film's plot.
"The Lookout" is also available on Blu-ray.
