PICK OF THE WEEK: TRANSFORMERS (Two-Disc Special Edition)

It's a bit ironic that a movie based on a line of toys was able to bill itself as one of the most original movies of last summer. But "Transformers" was one of the few non-sequels to captivate mass audiences during the blockbuster season.

Of course, its massive grosses (it's currently the third highest-grossing film of the year, after "Spider-Man 3" and "Shrek the Third") will inevitably lead to...sequels.

In its live action movie debut, the "Transformers" saga proves to be good dumb fun, boosted by a solid star turn from the year's breakout actor, Shia LaBeouf. At its best, the movie feels more like a product of producer Steven Spielberg than director Michael Bay.

The double disc special edition DVD features a commentary with Bay and extensive featurettes with over of two hours of information on the making of the film and the history of the franchise, from toys to cartoons. There are also multiple trailers and hidden easter eggs.

"Transformers" is also available on HD-DVD.

This week also marks the release of "Grindhouse Presents, Planet Terror - Extended and Unrated (Two-Disc Special Edition)," if you want to reunite last month's release of "Grindhouse Presents, Death Proof" with its formerly conjoined twin. Sadly we'll all have to wait a little longer for the excellent fake trailers that bridged the two features in theaters.
