PICK OF THE WEEK: WAITRESS

One of the summer's most successful indies, "Waitress" arrived in theaters with a dark backstory (writer-director  Adrienne Shelly was murdered after finishing the film) that stands as a sharp contrast to the movie's powerful positive energy.

The off-screen tragedy makes what's on-screen even more poignant, but the film easily stands on its own as a funny, well-observed story of a woman's blossoming sense of self-worth. Keri Russell's exceptional star turn leads a flawless ensemble cast including Nathan Fillion, Cheryl Hines, Jeremy Sisto, Andy Griffith and Shelly herself.

Bonus features on the DVD include a commentary from Russell, a tribute to Shelly, information about the Adrienne Shelly Foundation and several featurettes on the making of the film.
