Bella: User Reviews
This movie, for a change, reflects the higher values that most mexicans have instead of the stereotypical ugly, stupid, backward, uneducated, or overly emotional criminal (men) or victim (woman or child). Instead, we see the more complex human that has many layers of profound, sensitive, compassionate, and complex ideals, values and feelings.
I also like how it keeps you focused positive aspects of life while dealing with misfortune.
It is a beautiful, uplifting story told in a soft and warm manner.
Sorry, but Tasha Robinson's review is not the least-bit convincing to me, after watching the movie in the theater last night. I think the director did a fabulous job throughout the film! I had not the least bit of trouble following the story. Even the last scene (arguably the one that is most likely to be confusing) makes a lot of sense if you think about it for a minute. If the viewer will immerse him/herself in the story, it is profound and memorable. The director presents a glimpse into the souls of his characters, and in so doing, gives the thoughtful viewer a glimpse into his/her own.
My wife and I keep a "Home DVDs to buy" list, and Bella is right at the top.
Thoroughly enjoyed this film-it's a lovely very different love story-how to make lemonade out of lemons-
Report This CommentNever underestimate the stupidity of critics who, after not seeing anything controversial or anarchistic, immediately label a gentle, subtle film as a failure. This movie is a tribute to life. Real life. No, it isn’t a snippet of despair, cruelty and drug use, and therefore will be labeled as naïve (anything hopeful is). But, who cares what people like the artists in From the Corner of His Eye by Dean Koontz have to say --as they hang up pictures titled “cancer lurks in the baby’s brain”. Real people who live in the real world will appreciate this hopeful, beautiful, glitz-free gem. Its gentleness, openness, and simple beauty will attract an audience despite its lack of explosions and sadomasochism.
Report This CommentIt was refreshing to see a film with real life issues ending with smart choices and the pro-family atmoshphere was heart-warming. BELLA has won the people's vote but perhaps not the industry critics vote.
Report This CommentFantastic movie. Powerful story about family, friendship and struggles of life. It will touch you deeply. Well deserved winner of the Toronto Film Festival People's Choice award. A must see!!
Report This CommentDuring the movie and even after the movie, BELLA has given me a lot to think about -- not in a hyperintellectual way but in a normal thoughtful human being way. As much as I love comedies, I don't necessarily expect this from a comedy. I do, however, expect it of a drama even though some dramas end up being unidimensional and flat.
I also appreciate how this movie portrays hispanics in America. Refreshing. I think the style of the movie will appeal to hispanics even though my non-hispanic friends also liked it. I attended a sold-out show. We all applauded at the end.
