“Nine Months” (1995)
The story: A content, commitment-averse bachelor (Hugh Grant) freaks out when he discovers that his girlfriend (Julianne Moore) is pregnant.
Bromance rating: 3. Grant's character just isn't as loutish as intended, and there's never any doubt that he'll soon be on board for the baby.
Was it successful?: Like a wolf in hastily thrown-on sheep's clothing, "Nine Months" is standard chick-flick fare that disguises its true identity with a purely surface-level concern with the male fear of fatherhood. The film was released well before Grant revealed his talent for playing arrogant heels to American audiences, and his puppy-dog adorability was made for women, but not strong enough for men. The result was a decent mid-range hit that probably would've made twice its $70 million gross if it was a little more like...
