Original Casting Choice: Sylvester Stallone originally wanted to play the Detriot police detective transplanted to the 90210 district, but left the project when producers wouldn’t accommodate his request for amping up the action in the script.

Why the Switch Worked: The film plays as thin and formulaic when viewed today—sorry, nostalgic ‘80s-action-comedy fans—but Murphy’s fast-talking energy and street-smart verisimilitude lends it all the juice it has. Besides, what sense would a mumbling, bulging-bicep-sporting Axel Foley make?
