“Stop Making Sense” (1984)
The masterpiece of the wonderfully quirky 17-year career of the Talking Heads isn’t an album—it’s a movie. In this concert captured by “The Silence of the Lambs” director Jonathan Demme, the group is backed by some P-Funky musicians, including George Clinton collaborators Bernie Worrell (the man on the keyboards who gave Dr. Dre his gangsta sound) and backup singers fondly dubbed the Brides of Funkenstein. The Heads’ most recognizable hit, “Burning Down the House,” steals the show like it oughta; without it, songs like “Girlfriend is Better” and “Life During Wartime” would shine even brighter.
