4. "Metropolis" (1927)
Credit:LACMA
The robot: Maria
The program: German film icon Fritz Lang’s visually arresting take on capitalism and the plight of the worker envisions a future in which an indecisive activist's super sexy robot clone incites a lower class revolution with her fancy hip shaking.
The result: One of the first robot films ever, and by far one of the best looking with its dystopian future and angular German Expressionist design.
