"Armageddon" (1998)
What goes wrong: A giant meteor heads toward Earth, and only hardheaded rock driller Bruce Willis and his crew can save the world.
Who the movie blames: On screen, no one, but that doesn’t let Michael Bay, Jerry Bruckheimer and co-writer J.J. Abrams off the hook. Remember this one before getting too excited for “Transformers 2” or “Star Trek.”
The real disaster: The Earth was targeted by meteors in the same year's slightly more plausible “Deep Impact” and 1979’s Sean Connery flick “Meteor.” But nothing even comes close to Bay turning the end of the world into a beer commercial, complete with Aerosmith soundtrack, meaningful stares from hot chick Liv Tyler, and the working man triumphing over all odds in a situation where a few advanced degrees in science would surely come in handy.
