A mysterious psycho who makes how-to-seize-and-punish scrapbooks about his victims captures celebrity Jennifer Tree (Elisha Cuthbert) in his wine cellar. Luckily for Jennifer, chiseled, studly Gary (Daniel Gillies) is there to keep her company amidst all the loud noises, creepy videos and threats of unimaginable pain.

Big question: Can this thriller avoid the "torture porn" label and actually provide something scary?

Skip it: The killer's desire to destroy beauty makes "Captivity" seem at first like "Beauty and the Geek: Extreme Edition," but ridiculously illogical twists and acting that give the profession a bad name just convert it into garbage for garbage's sake. By the eighth time Jennifer's drugged and the screen fades to black, all you can do is hope that "Captivity" will stay dark and let you out early.

Catch it: If you'll never get tired of films with characters screaming, "You sick, twisted freak!" and having sex in situations you wouldn't think could set the mood.

Bottom line: Too incompetently made to realize its full potential to offend, "Captivity" still presents a dead puppy, a lot of anger towards women and deeply gratuitous stuff like Jennifer forced to drink a blood-and-body-parts smoothie. If this is Cuthbert's idea of being, as she claims, choosy about the horror offers she accepts, heaven help us from the ones she's turned down.

Bonus: Sadly, the flick doesn't deliver the bears promised in its misspelled MPAA rating box touting lots of "grizzly images" (we're pretty sure they meant grisly images), but imagining the animals busting in to save the day at least makes "Captivity" less painful to watch!
