Big question: Can Wain equal his last big-screen triumph as a director, "Wet Hot American Summer"?
Catch it: For Bible-related fun, "The Ten" is at least a higher power than "Evan Almighty," assembling ridiculous stories that only mildly relate to the Old Testament. (Examples: the tale of a skydiver stuck in the ground and one of rival neighbors collecting CAT scan machines). All the best stuff is on the first tablet and the hit-and-miss ratio is lower than the 18-part "Paris Je T'aime," but to get whacked-out comedy like this, the home runs are worth the strikeouts.
Skip it: If you're actually looking for analysis of the Bible. Unlike something like Kevin Smith's "Dogma," the only stance taken by "The Ten" is that love is good. Quite the daring statement!
Bottom line: Half of a hilarious flick is better than most other comedies these days—especially when we get to see Theroux as a procrastinating Jesus and Ryder screwing a ventriloquist's dummy. If it means a handful of giant laughs and a side order of groans, Wain, Rudd and company could adapt the Dictionary and we'd be willing to give it a shot.
Bonus: Just to give you an idea of how far "The Ten" takes its interpretations: "Thou shalt not bear false witness" is told through the story of an animated lying rhino, and "Remember the Sabbath and keep it holy" centers around guys skipping church to get naked and listen to Roberta Flack. That's what's great about religion: It means something different to everyone!
