French dude Anthony Gonzalez may be from France, but he knows well enough to obsess over the very American movies of John Hughes.
Hughes is the kind of bizarre mind behind teenage cinematic classics like "Pretty in Pink" and "The Breakfast Club." More than anything, it was the music that made those movies so special.
Enough that Gonzalez has all but created a tribute album, "Saturdays = Youth," to those movie moments, all swirling synths and introspective, angst-ridden lyricism.
I have a theory that if you play the album along to "Pretty in Pink," it's just like playing "Dark Side of the Moon" to "Wizard of Oz." Or something like that.
Truth be told, be really cool, skip the maudlin Hughes film fest and check out a movie from 1986 called "Out of Bounds," starring Michael Anthony Hall as a farm boy caught up in some L.A. drug deal gone bad. Siouxsie and the Banshees make a sweet cameo appearance, and you'll die when you see the styles kids are rocking. Actually, this is the beginning of a totally new story. Stay tuned...
Jake Ryan has come out of hiding to celebrate the amazing culture that lived and breathed in the '80s. So when we say "Special to Metromix" next to his byline, we really mean it.
