McCabe's is an unassuming storefront on Pico at the north end of Santa Monica. A mild-mannered guitar/stringed instrument shop by day, the joint opens up as a world-class concert venue by night. It's an unusual but welcoming setting - folding chairs set up in a converted garage with all sorts of vintage guitars lining the walls. When the right act rolls through, like the stoned grandeur of band Brightblack Morning Light, it's ideal. Their calendar is generally filled with cool, alt-folky types, with the occasional Black Francis and Evan Dando thrown in for good measure. There's usually cookies and tea in the lobby, and the people that work there are pretty nice. Plus you can walk a couple of blocks down for a drink at the very cool bar "Air Conditioned," also on Pico.
