You won't find any double-dipping at this sandwich joint. This Downtown L.A. institution a block from Union Station claims to be the inventor of the French dip. No pretension here – the floors are covered with sawdust, the seating is on picnic tables and pictures of trains and baseball memorabilia line the walls rather than signed celeb photos. The restaurant gets crowded, but it’s worth the trip for the best French dip at non-L.A. prices.

- Worth Noting:
- According to the Philippe's legend, the French Dip was invented in 1918 and got its name from the French roll it’s served on or because the name of the policeman it was first made for was officer French. They’re not sure which. Either way, it was created by accident when the French roll Philippe was making the sandwich on was dropped into the roasting pan with the meat juices. History was made.
