Overall, the Bread Convinced Me

A designer client of my wife first took her there, and since then she has taken other clients and myself. It has an industrial ambiance that on first glance could be considered rather cold, but their designer bared the old cement walls that show the grain of the wood that held the cement during pouring. Combined with minimalist shadowy lighting, dark seating, and the continuous hubbub the walls reflect loudly, it's rather interesting. Of course, you don't go to a restaurant just for the ambiance... the food here is an eclectic and different type of California cuisine, and though of slightly bigger than cavity-filler portions, it proved hardy and satisfying, though lacking differentiating excitement. I particularly like that they serve your main dish and side-dishes on one plate - like you would at home, and for the same reason: to minimize dish washing. In fact, they serve in-house purified carbonated water rather than the typical imports. I guess its that carbon-footprint/conservation verve that's popular these days. Works for me, anyway. But what sold me, and made this restaurant oh-so-different from other places (and wiped away my sadness at losing my occasional favorite San Gennaro that used to reside here), is the mini-loaf of freshly baked bread with seeds on top and a golden brown crust that the wait-staff delivers to your table on a mini-cutting board. Place a bit of butter atop, you might feel like you went to heaven. Consider trying it again for dessert, it's that good. Try the place out; see if it's a good fit. Make reservations, though Walk-ins on a busy night will wait over an hour (or end up taking a really long walk around the new glitzy Culver downtown before dinner).
