Holy of holies. Be prepared to genuflect. Johnny's pastrami sandwiches, rich and juicy and peppery and too big to eat unless you happen to be a football team, help to anchor the community here in the hood that is South Adams. A streetside shack has lovingly painted low-tech signage all over its sides and a menu that puts Fatburger and even The Hat to shame. Johnny's slightly disturbing exterior -- often haunted by panhandlers -- belies the glory of its food. Know what you want by the time you hit the window. Order the pastrami dipped in its own juice. Chili fries rock. And pop an antacid before you get there. This is one of those humble roadside stands chowhounds spend their whole lives trying to keep secret.
