Abuelita's web site points out that Topanga was part of Mexico until 1848, and this delectable, spicy spot pays worthy homage to those roots. Located in a charming cottage hung with Christmas lights, this creek-side Mexican restuarant serves up dishes that aren't quite like grandma used to make. Bubi's Albondigas Soup fuses Jewish stuffed cabbage with Mexican meatballs, Pasta ala Diabla brings chipotle cream sauce to Italian linguine, and the No Meato Burrito needs no translation. But the majority of the menu would be familiar to the residents of 1848 - the Pollo en Mole, the Enchilada Suiza, and the Carne Asada Plate. Live bands, tequila tastings, and karaoke the last Friday of every month make this place less geriatric than the name would suggest.
