Chef Evan Kleiman, author of 6 best-selling cookbooks and host of KCRW's "Good Food", learned to prepare meals at her mother's side and in the cucinas of Italy rather than apprenticing in fancy restaurants. More than 20 years ago, she put this training to the test when she opened Angeli Caffe, an affordable family eatery serving rustic food in a stylish environment. The beamed ceilings may be high and the surroundings elegant, but children can sculpt pizza dough while they wait for their food. For those who like to let their taste buds travel, Thursday nights celebrate international cuisines—ranging from Canadian to Greek—through prix fixe theme dinners served family style. And for those who literally like to let their taste buds travel, Chef Kleiman organizes week-long gastronomic tours of central Italy three times a year to visit markets, vineyards and take cooking classes with the chef.
