As a restaurant, R-23 sits in an atypical part of town—east of Little Tokyo and amidst a row of warehouses. Inside, the small dining room-cum-gallery takes on the self-consciously raw, urban aesthetic of an East Village loft: exposed brick walls, wood beams and mod furnishings that would make an interior designer weep, including curiously-functional cardboard chairs from Frank Gehry. For years, local foodies have found their way to this out-of-the-way spot for its stylized modern room and refined, new-wave Japanese fare (trust us: the sushi...not so much) which includes yellowtail carpaccio and lobster tempura. Commit your first drive over to memory—even fans have found it difficult to source out this "hidden" gem immediately on subsequent trips.
