Located uncomfortably close to a Shell gas station and the 10 freeway, Babita looks like a dive from the outside. But culinary master Robert Barrelleza has chosen this cramped, homey building as the site for one of the most innovative Mexican restaurants in L.A. Named after his youngest daughter, Babita boasts a menu that fuses the most unlikely ingredients in startling combinations—stuffed yellow chilis with salmon ceviche and strawberry sauce, beer-steamed lamb shank mixiote and crab-stuffed chile relleno. The chicken and shrimp "Elba", marinated in a Tequila-banana-chipotle sauce, is named for his wife.
