Koong sarong
We shed tears when L.A.’s best Thai restaurant closed for “renovations” two years ago—and again when it returned earlier this summer. Lotus of Siam, its Vegas sibling, was worth the drive in the interim, but ultimately, we’re no PB-and-banana-sammy-craving Elvises. Life’s vagaries have delayed our inaugural trip to Norwalk, but that doesn’t prevent us from fantasizing about the first bite of koong sarong this side of the Nevada line. Food snobs might balk at this appetizer of prawns wrapped in bacon, then sheathed in rice paper and deep-fried—they almost sound like they belong on the menu at TGI Fridays. Order them before you’ve even settled in—the sizzling bundles will be out in a flash. It’s the perfect way to get your nosh on before the chili-laced, coconut-rich pageantry begins.
