The cake: If you’re lucky, one of the few ready-made beauties will still be hanging around when you desperately make your post-work, pre-party stop. The dark chocolate with chocolate frosting is a favorite as is the double coconut. Be forewarned: Big Sugar’s version of red velvet sometimes comes topped with buttercream rather than cream cheese frosting. Strange, but true.
The price: $40 for 6-inch; $65 for 9-inch.
The extras: Writing and candles are complimentary, but if you want the razzle-dazzle of sparklers, it’ll cost extra.
If you have more time: Specialty cakes are special indeed. The lemon curd cake features organic lemons, the gravity-defying Boston cream pie makes an impressive birthday presentation, and for the indecisive, the Neapolitan icebox cake combines three classic flavors.
