Canter's
The cake: We don’t have to be sober to know these are hardly the best cakes in town, let alone on a block filled with kosher bakeries, but when hasn’t Canter’s gotten us out of a last-minute, less-than-fortuitous situation.? Whole cakes are limited to a wee 7-inch round, but there’s usually a chocolate or mocha flavor on hand. The bakery is open 24 hours too, which means no more jury-rigged Hostess cakes from the corner gas station.
The price: A steal at $10.95.
The extras: Writing isn’t advisable on such small cakes; the bakery doesn’t sell candles either, but you might be able to sweet-talk the bubbe behind the counter into giving you one or two.
If you have more time: Grab a table and pack in a bowl of matzo ball soup and a Reuben. Tell us, have you ever eaten well at a birthday party?
