Butter Tart's bacon butter tart

The goods: In Eagle Rock, newcomer Butter Tart is peddling its namesake treat from Canada by way of the Philippines. The bite-size original butter tart is a soft pastry shell filled with warm butter and brown sugar. There's also a bacon butter tart and a version with bacon, egg and Parmesan. Other pastry temptations include “pop tarts” (empanadas filled with fruit and nuts), coffee cake, cherry pistachio scones and, yes, cupcakes.

The price:  butter tart $1.50, bacon butter tart $2

The taste: The bacon butter tart is a little bit of breakfast heaven, like eating pancakes with bacon and syrup all at once. It simply cries out for coffee (which is excellent here).

Portability factor: B+. The little tartlets pack well, but they're best enjoyed hot and fresh.
