Xooro's Spanish churros
The goods: Just steps from the 3rd Street Promenade, Xooro is modeled after the churrerias of Madrid. Gourmet Spanish fritters come stuffed with custard and rolled in an array of toppings for a sort of cross between a churro and an eclair. The original is filled with vanilla custard and covered in cinnamon sugar; other rotating creations include Jordan's Special (Nutella filling, chocolate topping) and Turkish hazelnut (dulce de leche filling, caramel topping). You can also design your own.
The price: Original $3.50, custom $3.88
The taste: The original approaches churro perfection; warm and crisp without being sugary or greasy, it pairs well with the shop’s premium hot chocolate. We found Jordan's Special to be cloying, in need of some bitter coffee to tone it down.
Portability factor: B-. The fragile churros are best enjoyed on the spot, though Xooro offers trademark to-go tubes.
