After ditching their respective careers in dentistry and public relations, brothers Bob and Gregg Smith launched a restaurant empire based on their "House of Yes" concept. A reference to excellent service rather than the 1997 Parker Posey movie about incest, never saying no to a customer has contributed to the wild popularity of this squarely traditional Pasadena steakhouse. In its mustard-colored dining room adorned with magohany wainscotting, oil landscape paintings, Craftsman-style lamps, and an R. Kenton Nelson mural of the 1930s leisure class, the restaurant serves only USDA Prime steaks accompanied by sophisticated sauces such as bearnaise, peppercorn-sherry, bleu cheese-smoked bacon, and cabernet reduction. Oenophiles can choose from among more than 225 labels of wine, with an emphasis on the full-bodied reds that go so well with a good, bloody steak.
