Window shopping: The Americana at Brand
April 29, 2008
By Jaime Honkawa, Special to Metromix
A completely self-sustaining bubble world, the Americana at Brand
offers citizens a chance to ditch the drudgery of regular life with
dining, shopping and living all wrapped up into a nice, neat package
that entices residents to never leave—ever. It's kind of creepy in a Stepford way, what with the on-site retirement-home-looking residences, over
the top amenities, fountains that rival the Bellagio, and full array
of shopping and dining akin to that of the Grove. One has to stop to think, why would you ever leave this place? Maybe
for a Big Gulp of sanity with an unfiltered pack of reality? Yeah.
If you don't leave the confines of your one-mile radius abode as it is, then Americana might just be the utopia you have been wishing for. We, on the other hand, are waiting for a booming voice to come on over the loudspeaker
and tell us that we're the star in some deranged reality series a la "The Truman Show."
